California

Want to learn more about the different ballot measures in the upcoming midterm election?  The Institute of Government Studies here at UC Berkeley has a great blog that has thorough analysis of each measure and opinions to match, as well as commentary on the seemingly one-sided gubernatorial race.  Check it out, I found it very helpful.

Phil Angelides is fighting to invoke some passionate response from his supporters, but is still falling behind to a surging Governator in the California gubernatorial race.  While this is almost a month old, I think Angelides’ quote is pretty indicative of his campaign’s desperation:

The bell just went off for the 11th round of this fight … and I’m ready to score a knockout!  I’m a little battered. I’m a little bruised. I got a cut over the left eye. But I’m not a bleeder! I’m a fighter!

A fighter? Remember that Arnold’s whole reputation is constructed on his image as a fighter.  Let’s not forget that’s he’s squared off against martians, T-1000, a classroom of kindergartners, and pregnancy.

Phil, face it: you’re more than bruised—you’re getting your ass beaten.

In the future, perhaps the Angelides camp should emphasize their candidates strengths, even if they don’t derive from his biceps.  Time is ticking away, and California has yet to be impressed by what’s his name.

Arnold Schwarzenegger continues to dominate the California Gubernatorial race, forging bipartisan alliances and attacking the real issues that California residents are concerned with, including education and environmental issues. While his campaign continues to flourish, Phil Angelides swims in obscurity, pushed away from the collective memory of California both by a star-studded opponent and a tepid campaign of his own.

Angelides is struggling in even staunch democratic enclaves of the state. In the San Francisco Bay Area, he only leads by 10 points. In response, former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown issued a great statement: “(Angelides) should stay in Dinuba, Chico, San Luis Obispo, wherever there are no known systems of technology and communications.”

Great news for Angelides: as long as nobody knows what’s going on, you have a sliver of hope. But I have bad news: I think I saw a few Blockbusters and Hollywood Video stores last time I was in SLO town. As long as they have a copy of “Kindergarden Cop”, what’s his name will have his work cut out for himself.
